It's hard to believe that we are already 2 weeks into this adventure! We have had a fantastic time exploring the beautiful city of Oberursel (walking an average of 7 miles a day). The forests look like scenes from a fairy tale. The Altstadt ("Old City") of Oberursel is a wonderful journey back through time, with some buildings dating back to the 15th century. The first Saturday in Germany, we got to experience the yearly Flohmarkt in the Altstadt. It was really neat to see all the foods, clothing, books, toys, artwork, and other items being sold!
We were also very blessed because the day after the Flohmarkt (September 3rd) was our 11-year anniversary from when we first started dating! We used to dream about going to Germany, and it feels surreal that we are actually here and LIVING here for a year with our children! We got to celebrate our anniversary with our very first German Gottesdienst at St. Johannes Gemeinde (the Lutheran Church right next to the Seminary), and a fun walk through the city and countryside to McDonald's (the kids are just toddlers after all).
It has been great to meet the students, professors, and staff at the Lutherische Theologische Hochschule! We have attended a few potlucks, which to our surprise are called "potlucks" in German. We have truly enjoyed getting to know the other students and their significant others through potlucks and around campus.
We have also officially registered with the city. To celebrate, we got authentic pretzels from a local bakery. I think it's safe to say the boys' favorite part about living in Germany so far is the bus and train rides. Although it's not as efficient as we had hoped and anticipated, we are slowly getting the hang of their system. It only took us getting on the wrong bus and ending up in the neighboring village of Bad Hamburg!
