Reformation Sunday! Nailed it!

Happy Reformation Day!

This past weekend the Nuss family took on Wartburg, Eisleben, and Wittenberg! Each year on Reformation Sunday/Reformation Day, we celebrate the Holy Spirit working through brave men such as Martin Luther, Philip Melanchthon, Justus Jonas, and the Elector John of Saxony, who risked their lives to proclaim that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, as revealed by Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone. The seemingly simple act of one man posting his 95 Theses on October 31, 1517, sparked that Reformation.

We are blessed that we had the opportunity to go on our Luther tour. Wartburg is where Luther was hidden by the Elector Frederick III of Saxony after Luther was declared an outlaw by the Edict of Worms. While in Wartburg, Luther worked on one of his most important works: translating the Greek New Testament into the common German language. Wartburg was also established in 1067 (!), so touring a castle almost 1,000 years old was amazing!

Luther was born and died in Eisleben, and we were able to see both the houses where he was born and died. He is actually buried in the Schlosskirche in Wittenberg, where he posted the 95 Theses. And Wittenberg is so far our favorite city in Germany! Our hotel was right across the street from the Schlosskirche, and we took a fun street-train ride through the city and saw many of the historical sites of Wittenberg. We were also fortunate enough to attend an English service at St. Mary's led by a LCMS pastor. Singing "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" in the church where Luther, Bugenhagen, and other great Lutheran Reformers preached was a great way to celebrate and honor our rich history.
