Christus Mansionem Benedicat!

2024 went by in a flash of an eye and so much growth and beautiful memories were made. After getting back to the States it feels the fast pace of the USA has been a lot to adjust back too, as we mentioned in our Thanksgiving post.

Start of a New Semester

The summer semester at the Lutherische Theologische Hochschule began April 16th!  We have enjoyed the long break since the end of the winter semester, and we are very grateful for the great quality family time that we have been blessed with.  During the first week of April we took a little to trip to Friedberg a little town about 40km from Oberursel. There was a lovely Burg (Castle) that we got to explore, we were also able to see some American History as this was the location where Elvis Presley was stationed while in Germany. We also took one last big trip before the start of the semester.  We drove west and surprised the boys with a trip to Disneyland Paris!  We spent our first day in Paris seeing the Eiffel Tower, and it is TALL!  Eric, Curtis, and Samuel climbed the bell tower of the Colgone Cathedral (back in February), and that was very high.  But the Eiffel Tower is double the height of the Cathedral!  We didn’t get the chance to go up the Eiffel Tower, but standing at the base of it, the structure is an impressive monument to the ingenuity of mankind.

Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and back, Oh my!

With classes at the Lutherische Theologische Hochschule beginning soon, we decided to rent a car and take a trip during the last week of September. We left Oberursel on Monday and drove to Nuremberg, where we toured the Palace of Justice—the location of the Nuremberg Trials after World War II.  It was both a fascinating and somber experience to sit in the courtroom where those trials took place. We had a lovely time walking around the city and exploring different statues and finding a super fun playground. After Nuremberg, we arrived at Hohenstein, which is a small village close to Kirchensittenbach in Bavaria.  The AirBnB was an old barn that the owners renovated, and it was amazing!  We arrived at night, so when we woke up on Tuesday, we were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by a beautiful view of the countryside.  And right across the street was a castle perched high on a hill!  We climbed the hill (which basically became a cliff with some stairs) and stood next to the castle and observed the spectacular view of the Bavarian hills and farmlands!

Two Week Update

It's hard to believe that we are already 2 weeks into this adventure! We have had a fantastic time exploring the beautiful city of Oberursel (walking an average of 7 miles a day). The forests look like scenes from a fairy tale. The Altstadt ("Old City") of Oberursel is a wonderful journey back through time, with some buildings dating back to the 15th century. The first Saturday in Germany, we got to experience the yearly Flohmarkt in the Altstadt. It was really neat to see all the foods, clothing, books, toys, artwork, and other items being sold!

We made it to Germany!

After a 6 hour delay in Atlanta, that resulted in a missed connection flight and 14 hour layover in Istanbul, we have arrived in Oberursel, Germany! We arrived around 10am local time (3am central time). What was supposed to be a 15 hour trip became 36 hours, but we are so excited to begin this new journey! The boys had a blast on the airplane and exploring the airports! We were also able to find some authentic Turkish Delights during our layover which was fun because we read about them each time we read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
